Flex the Idea Muscle

"An Idea can change your life."

Right from the biggest wonders in the world, to the smallest things like you grabbing a glass of water, everything spurts from a tiny spark in your brain - an idea. Life is nothing but a string of ideas manifesting into action.

But, how much do we really promote ideation, be it in children or the corporate world? The curiosity of children is generally suppressed knowingly or unknowingly, willingly or unwillingly by parents, teachers, and everyone around. The corporates have brainstorming sessions, and some events where you ideate, evaluate, and then plan. Is that really enough?

As per James Altucher, there is an idea muscle that needs to be practiced every single day just as we work on our physical muscles. It’s like weightlifting. When you lift slightly more than you can handle, you get stronger.

Altucher's prescription: Feed your brain with liberal bouts of reading (minimum two hours a day from four different books) and maybe some internet surfing. Let your mind wander, be open to the world around you and tune into the pain points of everyday life. Then produce ten ideas. Every day.

There are many many books available that help or at least define the process to generate ideas. Edward de Bono has in all his books, courses challenged the way we think, the way we generate ideas. How I wonder if this is what was taught to us in schools? or even practiced at home with parents?

The book 'How to get Ideas' by Jack Foster helps discover the secret to getting more and better ideas.

Here are a few things you should do-

  1. Condition the mind to be more child-like (curious and inquisitive)

  2. Experience new things (increase your exposure to new places, people, activities, and adventures)

  3. Build courage to fail and learn from it

  4. Get more inputs - Read

  5. Visualize success

  6. Team up with energy ( people who motivate)

  7. Relax (All the great inventions happened during relaxation)

We recommend you read the book for details

This coupled with Altucher's prescription would make you an idea - machine. Are you ready to flex your idea muscle?
